Iaido is a martial art using a real or wooden sword in solo and paired
practice. Iaido katas begin and end with a shealthed sword and hence involve
the drawing [nukitsuke] and sheathing [noto] of the sword along with various
steps in-between. Iaido is a very disciplined art and requires great concentration and alertness while remaining calm and relaxed. Through continuous practice of fundamentals and the katas the practitioner seeks to improve oneself physically, mentally, and spiritually. At times test cutting [tameshigiri] is done to ensure that proper practice and progression is being made by the student. Bluegrass Budokai has been granted the right to lead study groups in the art of Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido by Roger Wehrhahn Shihan of the North American San Shin Kai. Wehrhahn Shihan himself is a student of Mitsuzuka Takeshi Sensei. New students are always welcome. Please contact our staff if you have any questions about class or weapons. Study group classes are held at the following locations and times.
