We are an independent school, free to share aikido with all who wish to train.

The founder of Aikido was Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). He was born into a farming family in the Wakayama Prefecture (now known as Tanabe). The young Morihei would listen as his father Yoroku would tell the tales of the younger Ueshiba’s grandfather, Kichiemon, who was said to be one of the strongest Samurai of his day. Morihei eventually did follow his grandfather’s warrior ways by beginning his study of sumo wrestling. He began his study of Jujutsu and swordsmanship very soon thereafter and realized he had quite an interest and ability in these studies.

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art, it is dedicated to self defense and is founded on the principle of harmony. Aikido practitioners do not compete in tournaments for philosophical and practical reasons. Philosophically, Aikido practitioners are dedicated to avoiding confrontation and neutralizing conflict. To avoid a fight, is one of the highest goals. Practically, the techniques taught in Aikido are designed to end a conflict with rapidity and permanence.

Bluegrass Budokai continues this study by blending the practical with the philosophical. Classes are held through out Kentucky. If you want to attend a class please send an e-mail to info@bluegrassbudokai.com
